AN ESTIMATED 12,000 CHILDREN ARE TRAFFICKED OUT OF NEPAL EVERY YEAR.

The Twelve Thousand narrates the true story of Sona, a survivor of human trafficking and invites you to become a part of the solution.

Sona was trapped and forced to work in an Indian brothel for three years. She was rescued, repatriated back to Nepal and brought to our local partner’s safe homes. For the first time in her life, she felt love and respect and began her healing process.

A decade later, Sona is a leader in the homes, teaching art and working toward her degree in social work to help girls just like her. Creating loving safe homes is Sona’s hope for Nepal.

"If sharing my story will help other kids find healing like I did, I want to tell it."

—Sona

Over the last two decades, our established local partner in Nepal has helped over 600 children find healing and restoration through their safe homes. But with a waiting list of children who need a safe place to call home, there’s an urgent need to expand our capacity for care.

Multiple rented facilities mean our local partner faces a regular threat of eviction, growing security concerns, annual rent increases and a lack of space to restore more children. To increase our capacity to care for more brave survivors, we need permanent facilities to call our own.

the heart behind the film

Behind the Scenes

There are no professional actors in the film. Instead, Nepalese Nationals directly affected by human trafficking dramatize a true story.

The Cast of The Twelve Thousand

Written and Directed by Eric Davis and Produced by Randy Watson, the film was shot over 9 long days in Kathmandu with over 150 volunteers.

Sita, our lead actor, was born into the lowest social class in Nepal. Prior to her life at the safe home, she was unable to communicate outside of her class. She volunteered to play the lead role in The Twelve Thousand out of love for the organization, and her real-life friend, Sona.

Before filming, Sona helped Sita rehearse and understand the details of her story. Sita is currently in high school, with dreams of becoming a flight attendant someday.

The Twelve Thousand serves two purposes: a North American campaign to build new safe homes and a trafficking prevention tool in vulnerable Nepalese communities.

Filmed in the Nepalese language, The Twelve Thousand illustrates the coercion and manipulation traffickers use to trap children in slavery.

Our team of dedicated national leaders use The Twelve Thousand film as part of their rural prevention programs.
